KSA100 — What Should Be the Right Way to Implement This Mandatory Training Part?

By now most EASA flight schools providing ATPL(A) theory have incorporated KSA100 into their programs. However, implementation quality varies significantly.

The Initial Perspective

When first studying EASA guidelines on this concept, the author—an accredited aviation psychologist—felt both excitement and confusion. "Knowledge, skills and attitude" combines familiar elements from pilot training and assessments. The enthusiasm stemmed from finally incorporating this critical component; the confusion arose because guidelines permitted flexibility.

The Implementation Problem

The regulations allow flight schools considerable discretion, provided they follow general scoring methods. Verification can be conducted by Head of Training or Chief Theoretical Knowledge Instructors—often without psychology backgrounds.

The author observed most schools responded by adding KSA100 as online quizzes and questionnaires during the pandemic shift to remote learning. This represents a fundamental misunderstanding.

Why Online Assessment Misses the Mark

"KSA100 is based on a practical approach" centered on observable pilot competencies requiring social interaction. While personality tests provide supplementary data, genuine assessment demands observing student interactions, teamwork, and behavioral patterns.

Effective implementation requires expertise in aviation psychology, sociology, and pedagogy—not just domain knowledge of flight operations. Qualified assessors can identify individuals potentially unsuited for cockpit environments, which though rare, carries significant safety implications.

The Right Approach

When implemented properly with qualified aviation psychologists conducting in-person sessions, students gain:

  • Practical knowledge application
  • Meaningful feedback on social competencies
  • Time to develop and practice skills before job selection
  • Enhanced self-awareness and growth

The author emphasizes that organizations prioritizing safety standards implement higher-quality KSA100 programs yielding observable improvements in student engagement, interpersonal effectiveness, and professional confidence.
