Under EASA CAT.GEN.MPA.175(b), applicable since 14 February 2021, a commercial air transport operator must ensure that flight crew complete a psychological assessment before commencing line flying. The duty sits with the operator — not with the individual pilot, and not with a training organisation.
The Acceptable Means of Compliance describe an assessment covering cognitive abilities, personality traits, operational and professional competencies, and the social competencies underlying CRM. It should be validated, informed by job analysis, and performed or overseen by a psychologist knowledgeable in aviation. The AMC reference point for currency is normally the preceding 24 months.
This is not a medical or a mental-health examination. It is an occupational suitability assessment, separate from the Class 1 medical and from aeromedical mental-health evaluation.
